Camping 101-
The following will brief you on the basics needed for camping with two young boys and two frazzled parents.
1)Know where the nearest emergency room is. You may need to take your son there to get Dermabond (liquid stitches) on his ear not two hours after setting up camp. See Pic of Aidan's ear.
2)Bring either no changes of clothes for anyone to change into and resign to smelling and being dirty all weekend or do the opposite and bring about 5 changes of clothes per day for all the playing with soot, dirt, gravel and splashing in the nearby stream that time will allow. We opted for both. Being filthy in new changes of clothes all weekend.
3)Understand that even though one might think children would be exhausted after all the fresh air, actually getting them to stop messing with each other, turn off their flashlights, and assuring them that there are no wild animals in the vicinity, they will be awake long after dark and they will NOT sleep in. There also will be no naps or rest periods that don't involve threats or loss of S'mores.
4)Some important things you should NOT FORGET to bring: First Aid Kit (that includes liquid bandages...ears bleed a lot), Paper towels, aluminum foil, two identical flashlights for both children, ice, and sippy cups that don't leak on the tent floor.
After all that, have a great time! We did! The weather was beautiful. It couldn't have been more perfect for camping, 80 degrees in the day, about 50-55 at night and perfectly clear. We heard a screech owl, caught a crawfish in the creek beyond our campsite, made S'mores on the fire and Pineapple upside down cake in the dutch oven, had amazing meals including cinnamon rolls baked in hollowed out orange peels, amazing roaring fires in the morning (because it was so chilly) and at night, a day with Grandma and Grandpa Bassett in the woods relaxing a doing a crossword puzzle, hotdogs roasted on the open fire, and so many amazing memories. The boys are thrilled and can't wait to go again! So, so, so much fun!
